“No person is your friend who demands your silence or denies your right to grow”
– Alice Walker
I felt really connected with this quote today as I continue to find my voice. I’ve been facing light scrutiny from those closest to me. I have chosen not to censor myself or be complicit by not expressing my disdain for the current administration’s immigration enforcement policy, which will affect hundreds of thousands of immigrants and children facing deportation in raids from ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) agents. It just feels like it’s un-American! As a nation built of immigrants — targeting children, asylum seekers, and lawful migrants specifically the racial profiling those of Latin American origin seems like it goes against the principles of our great democracy. In a nutshell, It’s okay to disagree. It is okay to have a difference in opinion. But it’s not okay to encourage silence in fear of retribution.
